I’ve been on vacation and have lots to share, but I need a catch up day today. So instead of writing a post, I’m sharing a quote from Do Dogs and Cats Have the Right to Live? It’s short but packs a punch.
Quote of the Day
“…Humans are animals. Is it okay to kill a human if it’s done humanely?”

Hi Celeste! I hope you had a wonderful vacation. 🙂 Your quote definitely packs a punch! For me, I say no!! We are all living beings and deserve to live with dignity. That’s my opinion. Thanks for sharing!
Hey there Violet! This quote spoke to me – it’s simple and sublime! I’m with you about it too, that’s for sure. Thanks so much for popping by and adding a lovely violet hue to my little blog! Celeste 🙂
In India, people do loosely use word like –‘welfare’, cruelty’, ‘compassion’, ‘friendship’, ‘slaughtering in a humane manner’, ‘unnecessary pain or suffering’, ‘livestock preservation and protection’. I have prepared one brief note and mailed to many of my friends. I have reproduced it below.

==================================================================================================
Animals are inquiring with us—–what is the meaning of these word—-‘welfare’, cruelty’, ‘compassion’, ‘friendship’, ‘slaughtering in a humane manner’, ‘unnecessary pain or suffering’, ‘livestock preservation and protection’…………….?????
There are requesting us to help them in understanding few things –
Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) make stringent rules for transportation of animals to slaughter houses and for slaughtering in humane manner.
Is slaughtering a humane act ? If not, than how can slaughtering be in humane manner. Is this the welfare of animals ?
AWBI’s preamble mention – The Constitution of India Provides Animal Protection by Article 51 Ensuring -Compassion to all Living Creatures-
You never allow animal to be killed if you have compassion for them
AWBI website shows photograph and quotes of Lord Mahavira, Gandhiji and Jawaharlal Nehru (quotes of Lord Mahavira- All beings are fond of life, they like pleasure and hate pain, shun destruction and like to live; they want life and want to live long, To all life is dear; hence their life should be protected. Gandhiji-“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” quotes from Jawaharlal Nehru “Real kindness come from a sense of friendship with animals).
Mahavir and Gandhiji never allowed animal killing in a humane manner or otherwise.
Is it a friendship to allow animals to be killed in humane manner for human food
The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) is a statutory advisory body on Animal Welfare Laws and promotes animal welfare in the country. Established in 1962 under Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960
killing itself is a cruel act
Function of AWBI-To advise the Government or any local authority or other person in the design of slaughter houses or the maintenance of slaughter houses or in connection with slaughter of animals so that unnecessary pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is eliminated in the pre- slaughter stages as far as possible, and animals are killed, wherever necessary, in as humane a manner as possible-
Only dead knows the pain suffered by him/her at the time of killing. Was it ‘unnecessary pain or suffering’? Who decide this ? We need to go ‘up’ to check with dead whether they suffered pain at the time of slaughter ??
Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries- for matters relating to livestock production, preservation, protection and improvement of stocks. This department gives Capital subsidy of 50% to rural slaughter houses
is this preservation and protection of live stock. AWBI gives grant to Gaushalas/animal shelters. One Government department gives money to protect and second department gives money to kill.
Extract from AGM minutes of AWBI-“The Chairman emphasized that training is extremely important, and suggested that even butchers should be trained for humane slaughter. The importance of training for promoting animal welfare should never be underestimated The Chairman then touched upon the fact that the huge increase in both, human and animal population is resulting in increased man – animal conflict”
This conflict is created due to huge breeding of animals for human food.
We are allowing this to happen..we pay less attention to it ….but..we are paying price for it…..heavy price….. We, human beings, are getting worst treatment than animals. Terrorists are killing people (be it poor or rich- any religion-any country) and they don’t refer any dictionary to find out meaning of any words. Terrorist are not hypocrite. They kill you.. be it cruel, unnecessary or necessary suffering, killing in human or devil manner….
We allow our Government to promote animal slaughterhouses….this same Government… silently operates so many human slaughter houses…Government allows liquor, cigarette, tobacco industries, fast food companies, soft drinks, etc… to operate in this country…. people health gets affected and it kills lacs of people…….
In fact, animal slaughter house is our slaughter house. It is proved beyond doubt that meat is responsible for cancer, heart diseases and other serious health issues. Meat Industry is also responsible for huge environmental damage and for acute food shortage in world (Animal need to eat 16 kg food to produce one kg meat) .
Centuries ago- Greek Philosopher- Pythagoras told “As long as man massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love” and Russian writer & philosopher- Leo Tolstoy also told-“As long as there are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields.
We need to help animals getting their rights—“ right not to be killed” and not just ‘welfare’. Rights are much more important than ‘welfare’ because rights impose a burden on other parties to accept it. Welfare just ensure that they are kept in good condition till they are slaughtered.
Animal welfare (or right) is possible only and only if more and more people turn vegetarian.
(Note- This mail is not to criticise activities of AWBI. They are doing what they can do best within their legal framework. But, there is a great need to have one legal agency which promote Vegetarianism. )
Where’s the button that I can “like” this a billion times???? LOL Hope you had a great vacation!
What a thoughtful comment! I really appreciate it!!!! (I need a button for adding a billion exclamation points – hehe). Celeste 🙂
