There’s pink slime in your beef!

According to Meatonomics author, David Simon, “…Pink slime is a protein paste created by spinning otherwise-inedible beef scraps in a centrifuge and treating it with ammonia to kill bacteria. US law allows the product to be added to ground beef as a filler in amounts up to 15 percent without adding additional labeling. ”

Eww! Okay, I was not vegetarian during our Croatia trip, but Florence was VERY good! And we have both been eating vegetarian since our return to Scotland. I haven’t given up cheese, but I still think you should be proud of us. Your influence has made a difference in our lives. šŸ™‚ – Mike

    • Your comment warms my heart Mike! I am extremely proud of you guys – both of you!! It’s not easy to change habits, especially when most of the people around you are staying the same. I also think that it’s especially challenging for you guys because you move around so much. It’s sometimes hard to find healthy food in new areas. So a big pat on the back to both of you!! Celeste šŸ™‚

  2. Wow, 15%…….now I know why beef rissoles are round, it’s the influence of all that pink slime spinning! šŸ˜³ Cheers, Steve

    • Even if I wasn’t already vegan, I don’t know that I could eat hamburger again after learning about this. I almost posted a photo of pink slime, but I didn’t want that gruesome image on my blog! Thanks for your comment!! Celeste šŸ™‚

Thats Just plain gross, I am a vegetarian but not a vegan, I need to much protein each day because of a injury I have. So I am forced to eat foods like yoghourt, cottage cheese and others which my brain wont allow me to remember this early in the morning šŸ™‚

  4. Yuck! That is really disgusting! I’m glad I’ve chosen to eliminate meat from my diet, I’m getting there little by little. šŸ™‚

  5. I like how you have been writing lately on the hidden issues related to food.. They are quite an eye opener.

  6. Mya says:

I heard about this awhile back and I could not believe it; people are literally eating poison (ammonia). I’ve also heard they use this in school cafeterias; just disgusting!

    • Don’t even get me started on school lunches! Thankfully, there is a big movement to change school lunches right now. But yikes – how have we become so sloppy with what we’re feeding ourselves? Thanks for your comment Mya! Celeste šŸ™‚

  7. That seems really gross – quality production in America is just disappointing.

  8. Lucy’s horror = Always justified.

  9. Oh that seems pretty gross…. good to know! Thanks šŸ™‚

  10. Anna says:

Oh yes, this has been going on….Thanks for bringing attention to it.

    • Hey there Anna! Always a pleasure to hear from you chica!! We just got back from photographing more of the elephants in Dana Point. I love the one with the wings at the harbor – that’s my fave!! Celeste šŸ™‚

  11. Luke says:

Thanks for sharing this. There is so much ignorance about the process of meat amongst its consumers.

  12. Oh my goodness! I knew beef was a bit sketchy, but this is worse than I imagined! Thank you for sharing Celeste!

  13. Sadly another example of our government NOT protecting our health, but protecting the big food corporations’ profits instead. I’ve said for a long time now I won’t eat meat from tortured animals (factory farming) but now I’m adding poisoned meat to the list. I would be vegan if I didn’t have a good source for locally grown, pastured meat. Most people don’t want to spend the money for this quality, but you can pay for healthy food now or sickness care later. Besides, I find eating very small quantities is satisfying when it is high quality. I’m with you, Celeste, that picture of the pink slime is disgusting when you think it is ice cream at first and then you find out what it really is…ugh.

    • Reading Meatonomics made me mad at our government. I was aware of some of the things they’re doing to protect the big food corporations, but not the extent of what they’re doing. It’s horrible!!! And I honestly think that the average person is unaware, myself included! Thanks for your comment chica! Celeste šŸ™‚

  14. sophiazerg says:

The picture and the caption had me chuckling.
The pink slime on the other hand, is absolutely revolting (I’ve seen images of that!) and I cannot believe it’s LEGAL to feed people this.

    • I only just learned about pink slime Sophia. I was going to put a photo on my blog, but like you say it was so revolting that I just couldn’t stomach having it on my pretty little blog. It really is sad where we’ve come with food today. So much of what we eat really shouldn’t be consumed at all. It’s also sad that instead of fighting against this stuff, the government allows and often encourages it. Thanks for reading chica!! Celeste šŸ™‚

      • sophiazerg says:

Definitely too revolting for your pretty little blog. šŸ™‚
You are so right about the government; things that are so alarming to so many of us, seem to be promoted and encouraged by our governments. (Like, GMOs).

Just another reason I’m glad I’m vegan!! I was involved with planning and helping with Animal Rights Day last week, please drop by to check out my report!

    • Just checked out your report on Animal Rights Day – great post! That’s the kind of involvement that makes a difference in the world. Maybe just a little difference, but if we all take action like that it will have a huge impact! Thanks for all your support Carmen!

  16. Color me HORRIFIED! …Well, you know, Halloween is coming up, so this is a great spooky story…only it’s true, so it’s even worse! What goes bump in the night? Your DINNER does! ::Enter evil gross hamburger that burbles and makes slorping sounds:: God, I’m glad I’m vegan. šŸ™‚

  17. LFFL says:

Blech is all I can say.

  18. Adam Hughes says:

how revolting! šŸ™‚ some people will eat anything, hee-hee
