I used to run groups to help shy people feel more comfortable in social settings. Basically, I’d put a bunch of shy people in a room and have them practice doing things that made them anxious.
For example, I’d have someone like Koothrappali from the Big Bang Theory practice talking to women. For those of you that don’t get the reference, Koothrappali is so shy around women that he can’t speak to them unless he’s drunk.
Today I’m going to ask you to play, Two Lies & a Truth, a game I played with my shyness group members. You play by sharing three things about yourself, two of which are made up. Then people guess which one is true.
I was spurred to do this by Natalie and her fabulous blog, Fruit & Family. To celebrate he 100th post (you go girl!), Natalie shared 25 things about herself with 5 of them being fake. I thought this was great, so I’m doing something similar.
Let’s Play Two Lies & a Truth
Celeste’s Lies (oh, and a truth)
Here are two lies and a truth about me. So what do you think is true about me? Come on, take a stab at it.
A. When I was in my 20’s, I walked across the state of Iowa.
B. I used to be an avid surfer, but I rarely surf anymore.
C. When I was a child I had a Spanish-speaking nanny and learned to speak Spanish fluently. I’m a bit rusty now, however.
Celeste’s Hubby’s 2 Lies & a Truth
My husband, Paul, who you may know from the guest posts he’s written (How Not to Pick a Restaurant and The Hubby’s Tale) wanted to play too. What do you think is true about him?
A. I was a stand-in for Martin Scorsese in a TV commercial.
B. I had a brief scene opposite Steve Martin in Pink Panther II where I played an Italian waiter.
C. Debra Winger visited me in my dressing room at the American Repertory Theatre.
You can find our answers at the bottom of this post.
Come Join the Fun!
Like Natalie, I’m going to TAG some bloggers to play along. You can make the two lies and a truth about yourself or about something that you’re passionate about – whatever! And even if I didn’t tag you, I’d love for you to play too.
If you play, you’ll win a new car! And if you don’t play, a curse will fall upon you and you’ll go blind. Okay, so I’m getting carried away with this two lies thing – haha!

The Answers
My truth is A – I walked across the state of Iowa in my 20’s to help raise money and awareness about Marfan’s Syndrome.
My husband’s truth is C – Debra Winger really did visit him, but he was so dumbfounded that he hardly spoke to her.

This is fun! Here’s my truth and lies…
A. I was once in a Vodafone commercial.
B. I have a forklift license.
C. I once swam the English Channel for charity.
😀
Thanks for playing Poppy! So hmmm….I’m gonna guess that your truth is A. Am I right? Celeste 🙂
Yes you are right Celeste!! Good guess! 😀
My guess is B. I think you have a forklift license.
Oh sweetie, you’re so wrong! Poppy’s way to pretty to drive a forklift! Celeste 🙂
Nope, no forklift license here!! I don’t think I could be trusted operating such machinery! 😀
Oh Celeste, you’re so sweet, I’m blushing! I did start training as a mechanic when I was 16 though which wasn’t the most glamorous job!! 😀
Haha – I knew it! How cook that you were in a commercial girl friend! Have you done any other acting? Celeste 🙂
It was really cool! No just that, it was for their world of difference campaign, they were promoting volunteering so I was asked to do it because of my work with street children in Africa. It was fun! 😀
Fun! Ok…
a) My middle name is Agapanthus.
b) I have a tattoo of a dove on the sole of each foot.
c) I have a penchant for bollywood love songs.
Oh wow, what choices! I’m gonna go with the tattoo of a dove on the sole of each foot just because I think that would be so cool!!! Celeste 🙂
No. I kind of wish you were right though, it would be really cool – I don’t think my pain threshold would be anywhere near high enough. In fact my truth is…C. After travelling in India a few years back, I became completely hooked on listening to contemporary bollywood love songs…they can be just so darn catchy :-).
I say A because Agapanthus is a cool middle name.
No, my parents didn’t bless me with the middle name of Agapanthus…they chose Tora instead – it’s swedish I think. Thanks for guessing, but the answer is C :-).
My guess is B…:D
Thanks for guessing Poppy!…but C is my answer for me. Do you have any tattoos?
I can imagine Bollywood love songs are beautiful! Yes I have a few tattoos (10), I bet it would really tickle to get them on the soles of your feet though! 😀
Yes! I have such sensitive feet – I wouldn’t be able to keep them still for even a second. You have 10 tattoos! That’s awesome – I’m impressed :-).
Hehe, yes me too, I can barely manage a pedicure let alone a vibrating needle!!
Aw thanks, I love them, they all mean something to me. Some people get tattoos for fun and then regret the but it’s been 10 years since my first and I still love it! 😀
Lucky you that you got to travel in India!! C is a pretty cool answer too!! Celeste 🙂
yeah, pretty cool…like walking across the state of Iowa…wow! Go you! 🙂
ok, let me think …..
a) I’ve had the word VEGAN tattooed on the back of my right wrist so that if I’m ever rushed to hospital unconscious my care givers will know.
b) I came last in the Brighton marathon in 2012 but I’m still glad I did it.
c) A warrant was put out for my arrest in 2005 and I was sought by police going door to door after I cut a hole in a temporary paper notice at an AR demonstration.
What fun answers Violet! Hmmm…..since we both have vegan blogs, I’m gonna say that you have a VEGAN tattoo. Better safe than sorry! Celeste 🙂
Ha ha, actually that’s something that I’m thinking about doing but no, it’s not true yet. Actually the truth is in C. I couldn’t believe it after I moved house and the police tracked me down across the country because I’d cut the shape of a ‘V’ sign out of a laminated paper copy of a court injunction attached to a crowd barrier in front of a vivisection lab! You’d think they had better things to do with their time and resources. They knocked door to door in the street where I used to live until they found my Dad and made him tell them where I’d moved to!
I like the VEGAN tattoo idea but I’ll say B.
Me? Run a marathon?! Not likely!! 😀 No, the answer is C 🙂
Wow – truth is stranger than fiction!! That’s a funny story – so outrageous!! Thanks so much for playing girlfriend, your answers were so fun!! Celeste 🙂
Thanks for inviting me Celeste, we have laughed and laughed at everybody’s complicated lies and truths 😀
What a great idea and reasoning to get a vegan tattoo! Wow, I’m sorry that happened to you with the police, they are ridiculous sometimes. Recently, they arrested my very sick dad after he had left a doctor with a bag of his medication and claimed he was a drug dealer!! Scary when there are serious criminals out there! If you knew my dad, you’d know how bananas that idea was! The worst part is that they refused him his medication that he needs as they claimed it was illegal drugs – erm, ever thought of checking medical records police?!!
You just wouldn’t believe it unless it happened to you. Hope it all turned out ok for your Dad in the end.
Yes, its that bizarre. It did in the end thank you, apart from the memory of the experience for him!
Ha ha! I think I’ve heard of this exercise before. Fun! Here are mine…
a) I was a zombie extra in The Walking Dead during the first season they started filming here in Atlanta but I never made it on camera.
b) My parents chose my middle name based on a “Three’s a Company” character.
c) I lived in Alaska for a month back in 2002 doing research for graduate school.
You’re good at this Ketty – they’re all so believable!! You must be a master at the game Balderdash (if you’ve never played, then you’ve got to get it!). I think I’m gonna go with the first one, however; that you were a zombie extra. Celeste 🙂
B. I bet your middle name is “Mrs. Roper”.
Score for the hubby! My dad and mom named me after the blonde ….Chrissy. My middle name is actually Christina but they were inspired by Chrissy. So they say….but perhaps that is their lie. 😛
I’m going with A! Just because I love the Walking Dead and that would be so cool!
Wow! Such great truths and lies! They all sound possible to me :-). However, as a shy person, I would avoid your workshops like the Plague!! Without further ado:
1) I’m 1 in 10,000. I have a condition called Situs Inversus in which my internal organs are reversed.
2) While living in Baghdad, I had the great pleasure of using one of Sadaam Hussein’s golden “thrones” every day.
3) On a trip to Indonesia, I somehow ordered rujak cingur (buffalo lips). One taste and I went vegan.
Hey Annie! Haha – the last thing most shy people want to do is join a group of people and socialize. Amazingly, however; I was able to get a lot of people to take the plunge, usually after a couple of months of individual therapy. It helped that they knew that I suffered from severe social anxiety and had gone through a similar group myself.
Oh my gosh Annie, all of your statements sound wildly outrageous to me. It’s hard for me to believe that ANY of them are true. So, hmmm…. since I know you’re vegan I’ll go with #3 the buffalo lips one. I get the feeling that I’m not right, however! Celeste 🙂
All of these statements are true to someone in my life, but #2 is the truth for me.
It’s gotta be number 2.
Score one for Celeste’s Hubby :-)!
Outstanding!
1 and 3 are true of people you know – how crazy is that!!! You and the people you know are interesting and unique Annie! Love that! Celeste 🙂
Wow, Annie very interesting….I’m intrigued about the use of the golden throne?!! 😀
1) Growing up I had a pet rabbit named Snuffaluffagus that ran away
2) I have hand feed wild cheetahs in South Africa
3) I have swam with sharks while in Australia
Thanks so much for playing Igor! So your first one is sad, and the second two are hard for me to believe. Oh, I’m just gonna go for it and say that you hand fed wild cheetahs. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction! So am I right??? Celeste 🙂
You are correct, the first two are true and the third is something that I have yet to do.
It’s gotta be the sharks.
I’m guessing 3!
You want to swim with sharks??? You’re a lot braver than I am! Thank you so much for playing the game – your answers were fun! Celeste 🙂
Hi Celeste 🙂 Love it! I guessed right about you B, and I thought your hubby was in pink panther haha! This was fun thank you!!!
You were almost right about me. My other two answers were gigs I almost did. I was offered the stand-in gig for Mr. Scorsese and was asked to audition for Pink Panther. I had to turn down because both were in Boston and I was not.
Wow that’s awesome! Any big screen appearances lately? So great that you are involved on this blog!
Not lately. I am temporarily retired from acting. However, I am plotting my big comeback. Stay tuned!
So glad you had fun with this. It’s a lot like the game Balderdash – so much fun!!! Celeste 🙂
Hi Celeste,
I know you call me chica, but not much more Spanish happening here. That is a lie.
If you are a surfer, always be a surfer, it is in the blood. That is a lie.
SO, you must did lots of walking…..
Here I go:
When I was young, I did lots of baby sitting for collecting some money.
Stayed up very late to walk about in Rome.
Ice skating is lots of fun on a frozen lake during the winter. Same lake I used to row boat.
Lets see if you make some good guess.
I know you as an early morning walker, Anna, so I’m guessing you were a late night walker in your youth. Once a walker, always a walker.
Yes Anna – I did lots and lots of walking!! Haha! As far as your truth, I think it’s staying up late and walking around Rome. And thank you so much for taking care of Mambo today! He seems really happy! Celeste 🙂
Ha ha ha!! Fun game, Celeste, but you fooled me. I guessed B. because you live in California! And a random guess for hubby was A.
❤ carmen
Good guesses Carmen! I lived in Iowa in my 20’s (followed my first husband there). I’m very happy to be back in California!! Thanks so much for playing along Carmen! Celeste 🙂
I should have known California was a trick – too easy. But my guess about your hubby was almost right! 😉
Here’s mine:
A. I used to ride a motorcycle
B. I ran a daycare for 7 years
C. I was a cook before I got married
🙂 carmen
I say motorcycle. And yes, your guess for me was almost right. Had I not moved to California with my lovely Celeste, I would have done the stand-in gig for the commercial. I have absolutely no regrets for missing on that one. I think I got the better deal.
I’m glad you shared!! Hmmmm….I have no clue! I think of you as a dancer, so maybe you had to work as a cook to support yourself as a beginning dancer? No, I’m going to change that to that you used to ride a motorcycle. Okay, the motorcycle is my final answer! Celeste 🙂
A. I’m a bicyclist, Jean is the motorcycle rider.
C. I hate cooking, good thing you can eat fruit and a lot of veggies raw. I do cook potatoes, rice and oatmeal, though. 😉
That leaves B. I had a daycare for pre-schoolers in my home after Jean was born, so I could stay home with her.
Have a great week!!
❤ carmen
Jean is a lucky chica!! That’s wonderful that you took care of kiddos so you could stay home with her.
And I hear you about cooking! That might seem strange since I post a lot of recipes on my blog, but I really don’t like to cook. I hardly cooked before I went vegan, but after going vegan I couldn’t rely on take out and frozen foods anymore so I’ve been teaching myself to cook. I’m getting better at it, but I still see it as a chore.
Celeste 🙂
I really think I’d benefit from that group for shy people! I had no idea such groups existed.
Shyness groups are awesome! I know this because I used to suffer from such painful shyness that I had trouble talking to others or even making eye contact with them. It really held me back in life, so I finally got help through a shyness group. The group I went to was in the San Francisco Bay Area at The Shyness Clinic. Here’s the link: http://www.shyness.com/shyness-clinic.html.
This group helped me so much that I went back to school to study psychology so I could help others with their shyness. Once I jumped through all the hoops to get my psychotherapy license I started running such groups. I also worked with Dr. Richards and his shyness groups in Arizona. Here’s the link for that: https://www.socialanxietyinstitute.org/
I really, really believe in group therapy for overcoming shyness. The problem is that it’s challenging for shy people to go to such a group! Once they’re in the group, however; most find that it’s easier than they realized it would be. If you have any questions about help with shyness, please ask. I know lots about that subject!
Celeste 🙂
A. I lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in Africa as a child for several years.
B. The most I have ever run in a race is 50 miles.
C. I was a married at the young age of 21.
🙂
I’m guessing A simply because I like Ethiopian food.
Even the Ethiopian food we had in Vancouver???
I’m trying to forget about that.
Oh this is tough Tracy! The most believable one is that you were married at 21, but usually the believable one is wrong. So, I’m going to guess B. that you ran a 50-mile race. Thanks for playing! Celeste 🙂
Oh what an exciting game my friend! Thank you so much for inviting me to play. I’m sorry I’m a little late to the table. This pot belly of mine – it always makes me late. So three things about myself (two false and one true). This might be hard because I’m an open book here. But, I’ll give it a whirl.
1. I can type 50 hpm (hooves per minute).
2. Mommy tucks me in every night and reads me a bedtime story.
3. I’m working on a book.
Thanks so much for playing along Bacon! And for anyone reading your comment that doesn’t know – Bacon is a pig. And some pig you are Bacon, if you can type 50 hooves per minute!! Still, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that your truth is that you’re writing a book. If that’s true – that’s really exciting and I hope you’ll keep me posted!! Celeste 🙂
Snorts – this was really fun. Nope, I can’t type 50 hpm… somewhere around 20-25 perhaps. And nope, I’m not writing a book… yet. It has been discussed but not yet. My truth is #2. Mommy tucks me into bed every night and tells me a story 🙂 I’m rotten that way. XOXO – Bacon
Aw, that’s a wonderful truth! What a lucky pig you are Bacon. And I hope that you write a book someday too – I’d read it for sure! Celeste 🙂
Piggy blushes. Thank you my friend. I’ll keep that book in mind. We’ve thought about it. I’ll definitely keep you posted! XOXO – Bacon
Hi Celeste – I posted a LIE here!!! http://thevegangreen.com/2013/09/23/honk-if-youre-vegans-blog-play/
Oops thought I was meant to write a blog post… and now just realised everyone’s replied on here in your comments!!! Oh well 🙂
The way you did it is wonderful – I love that you wrote a post!! There’s no right or wrong – just good fun!! Celeste 🙂
Great idea – the replies are really entertaining!!!
Celeste, you are so fun! Okay, here goes:
A. I am part Greek.
B. I work as a movie extra.
C. I was once bitten by a fruit bat.
Sure hope I win that car! 😉
Guess what Linda, you won the car!!!! Haha – seriously, if I were gonna give away a car it would be my own old, dented, beat up Hyundai. I doubt anyone would want it anyway.
Okay, so my choices are Greek, movie extra or bitten by a fruit bat. I’ve got a hunch it’s that you were bitten by a bat. You’re not a vampire, are you??? Celeste 🙂
No vampire blood. 🙂 No Greek blood either. 😉 I work occasionally as a movie extra. I have my own, old Hyundai thank you. Ha, ha, ha.
You did not mention the movie so I say A. You’re Greek to me.
Being a movie extra sounds like fun, at least a lot more fun than driving around in a beat up Hyundai. Ha!
What a fun idea!
OK,
1. My senior year of college, I ran naked around the campus with 7 of my friends as a senior prank.
2. My husband and I were once pulled over for pretending to be British and driving on the opposite side of the road at night.
3. As a voice major in college, I once auditioned for American Idol and got through to the second round.
Your answers are all so fun Kristin! Whatever the correct answer is, I’m gonna learn a lot about you girlfriend! Okay, so my guess is #3 that you auditioned for American Idol and got through to the second round. Yes?????
Thanks Celeste! Glad you enjoyed them – haha! 😉 My truth is actually #2. We thought we were being hilarious, speaking in British accents and cracking up while driving in the left lane. I was about 18 years old. It was late at night and there was no one around! Except, it turns out, a police officer, who did NOT find it so amusing… 😉
2 sounds fun to me. That’s my guess.
You’re right – nice guess! And it ABSOLUTELY was fun! 😉
No American Idol – oh well. It sounds like you and your hubby know how to have cheap fun! I hope the cop didn’t give you too hard of a time. Celeste 🙂
Ok Celeste – here are my 2 Lies & A Truth:
1. I once took an improv acting class taught by Canadian funnyman Jim Carey.
2. I worked as a publicist on a film set in rural Ontario with Steve Spielberg and he asked me out to dinner.
3. When I worked in PR, one of my first clients was the cast of the tv show Degrassi including Aubrey Graham who is now better known as the rapper Drake.
Guess away my friend!
Hey there Lori – thanks so much for playing! Wow – such exciting possibilities! Mostly because it sounds like the most fun thing that anyone could ever have done, I’m going to go with #1 that you took an improve class taught by Jim Carey. Am I right?? Celeste 🙂
Nope! My kids think I’m super cool because Aubrey Graham (aka Drake) was once a client of mine when he was just 13 years old on a Canadian television show called Degrassi: The Next Generation. I must say, he was a very polite young man!
Thanks for including me in your game : )
My guess is #3.
That’s pretty cool Lori! Thanks so much for playing – it was fun! Celeste 🙂
Now that’s what I call an online blog party….brilliant idea!
Thanks so much Steven – it was a lot of fun!! Celeste 🙂

Better late than never! Thanks so much for stopping by! 🙂
