Sean, from The Logical Vegan recently asked me for some blogging tips. He wants me to help him with blogging? What do I know? But he was sincere, so I shared several things that came to mind.
As the day went on, I kept thinking of other tips and jotted them down as they came to me. By the end of the day I had a long list. I guess you don’t go from only your mom and hubby reading your blog to almost 500 followers without learning a thing or two.
This is not to say that I know everything. Still, someone may benefit from what I’ve discovered thus far, so I decided to share what I’ve learned.
20 Top Tips for Bloggers
- Keep it short. I’ve read that people don’t want to spend more than a minute or so reading a post, so I try to keep my posts between 250 to 500 words.
- Write short paragraphs. This makes it easier for people reading on small screens.
- Post regularly. People will lose interest if you don’t post often enough. I try to write at least two substantial posts and several mini posts, like quotes and reblogs, every week.
- Don’t stress! When I first started blogging, I watched my numbers like a hawk and got stressed if I didn’t get a lot of hits. I don’t care so much anymore. I have good days and bad days – so what! No one writes top posts all the time.
- Read a lot of blogs. Find blogs that you’re interested in and read them. I’ve learned a lot from other bloggers about blogging, life and you name it!
- Connect. You can write the best posts, but if you don’t connect with others they won’t care that much about what you have to say. So be sure to spend part of your blogging time reaching out to others.
- Be a follower. It’s flattering to bloggers when you follow them, and more than likely they’ll follow you back. I follow everyone who follows me.
- Comment, comment, comment! Commenting will make you known. You’d be amazed at how many people I’ve found and followed from a comment they wrote on a blog post.
- Use people’s names. When writing a comment, I typically address the person by his or her name. I think this makes for a better connection.
- Be personal. I’m not saying that you should air your dirty laundry, but people want to know who you are. Share a little bit about yourself in your blog.
- Have a personalized “about” page. When I discover a new blog, the first thing I read is the about page. Some bloggers, however; leave this page empty. This always disappoints me. Use your about page to connect with your readers, and they’re more likely to read more of what you have to say.
- Share your name. For various reasons, some people don’t disclose their names on their blogs. I find it harder to connect with these bloggers. And as I keep saying – connection is vital!
- Say “Yes” a lot. Once you get known in the blogging world, people will ask things of you, like will you write a guest post for me or will you review my book. I’ve found that the more I say “yes”, the better things work out for me.
- Say “No” sometimes. Despite the bennies of saying “yes”, sometimes it’s better to say, “No.” When my gut tells me to decline – I listen.
- Personalize the look of your blog. For my first two months of blogging, I used a generic blog theme. It didn’t do my blog any favors, so I hired Natasha Basacchi to update my look. It’s made a HUGE difference in the interest in my blog.
- Chocolate is sexy! If you’re a food blogger, or even if you’re not, write about chocolate once in a while. It’s the easiest way I’ve found to guarantee lots of hits.
- Write catchy titles. I know that this is important, but I haven’t mastered it yet. So I’m going to defer to the link, How to Write Catchy Blog Titles.
- Use great photos. A good photo will grab a reader even faster than a catchy title. One of my favorite places to get quality free photos is freedigitalphotos.net.
- Invest in a good camera. Especially if you’re a food blogger, you can’t always rely on other people’s photos. Investing in a good camera can take your blog to the next level.
- Become a great photographer! I’m still working on this one, but I’ve come a long way. What really helped me here was taking an individual photography lesson. If you’re a food photographer, you might like 7 Simple Food Photography Tips, the post I wrote after my photography class.
That’s what I’ve discovered thus far, but I have much to learn. I still don’t know anything about SEO, having contests or how I can make a few pennies for all the writing I do. So I’d love for you to share what you’ve learned.

[ Smiles ] Lovely blogging advice, Celeste!
Thanks so much Renard – I appreciate that!! Celeste 🙂
This is all wonderful advice, Celeste! Nice work : )
Thanks for reading Carlynn!! I appreciate it! Celeste 🙂
Wonderful tips, Celeste! I have to agree, the first thing I read on a blog is the ‘About’ page. Dissapointed when it’s left empty!
The chocolate one is interesting, I’m sure it’s true 🙂
Hey Sophia! You’ll have check out the numbers on your next chocolate post and see if it works it’s delicious magic. Celeste 🙂
Grrrreat advice!! I`m looking to purchase another camera…any suggestions under $600 less would be great but still…
Thanks for reading Cheryl – I appreciate it! As for camera suggestions, I don’t know that I’m the best person to ask. I really a novice at photography. I do like my Canon camera. It’s an EOS Rebel T5i 18.0-MP Digital SLR camera. The newest models run around $900, but I got an earlier model at Radio Shack for $700. My dad bought a similar camera on Craigslist and got a good deal. If you’re comfortable with something used, that might be an option. Hope that helps!! Celeste 🙂
Definitely chocolate!!! great post!
I appreciate the comment Oliana! A chocolate post always draws me in – that’s for sure!! Celeste 🙂
Great tips and I agree with them all, especially #1. I, myself, have a hard time with really long posts unless it immediately grabs my attention. I have found that engaging in the weekly photo challenge has brought in more readers…photographers are cool. As for the chocolate thing, I’ve written it down on my list of topics I have yet to blog about. I have so much to say…..
Hey MaryJ! Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. I have a hard time with long posts too. I prefer short and sweet. Like you, sometimes a long post grabs me, but not often. Thanks for sharing about the weekly photo challenge tip – that’s a good one. And please let me know when you write a post about chocolate – I don’t want to miss it!! Celeste 🙂
Good advice and coincidentally, I did write about chocolate today. 🙂
Hey Aruna! I just checked out your chocolatey chocolate cake and it looked delish! Thanks so much for your comment – I appreciate it! Celeste 🙂
What a great post Celeste. I agree on all the tips and the chocolate one is killer. Time for me to post one :).
Sonal
Hi Sonal! I always appreciate your lovely comments girlfriend! Please let me know when you write a chocolate post so I don’t miss it!! Celeste 🙂
May be tomorrow ;). Trying a chocolate biscotti may be… Will post the vegan options as well :).
Wonderful Sonal! I’ve never made biscotti, but have always wanted to try them. If you post it with a vegan option that would be great. Celeste 🙂
Did you get a chance to check the nutty chocolate Biscottis that I posted with vegan options :)?
Thank you so much for telling me about your chocolate biscottis Sonal!! I did miss them! They look wonderful!! Here’s the link in case anyone reading this note wants to check them out: http://simplyvegetarian777.wordpress.com/2013/08/23/nutty-chocolate-biscotti-with-vegan-and-healthier-options/ Celeste 🙂
You sure are sweetheart 🙂
This is some helpful information. Thanks
Thanks Antoinette!!

Great advice, Celeste. Although there are a lot of blogs I enjoy, I usually check them here and there, but follow yours regularly for your connection, humor, thoughtfulness and personal touch.
One thing that I love that you did was leave us with an engaging story when you went on vacation. Each day was a cliff hanger that left your readers wanting more. And it showed that you cared about maintaining a connection even while you were away. Can’t wait to read more about your trip.
I don’t know if you can tell where your readers are from geographically, but if there are a few in your area, maybe a meet-up at a vegan restaurant, dog beach or Farm Sanctuary would be a fun way to. celebrate when you reach 500 followers. And you can use your fancy new camera. Just a thought. 🙂
I’m touched by your comment cowgirl! It means a lot that you feel connected enough to me and my blog to follow regularly. To be honest, I see you as a part of this blog. You’ve been following almost from the beginning. I still remember the first time you commented. You didn’t just comment once, but made several wonderful, thoughtful comments. I was so excited! And you’ve consistently been here, which is important to me and to my followers too.
I love your idea of a meet-up to celebrate when I reach 500 followers. I don’t think I have many followers in the area, however. I have a few in San Diego and a few in Los Angeles (like you chica), and maybe one or two in Orange County. I just don’t know if anyone would show up. I’ll give it some thought, however. I still like the idea of making bumper stickers when I get to 500. Maybe I can do a big bumper sticker give-a-way or something. We’ll see!
Have a fabulous weekend cowgirl! Celeste 🙂
These are neat, Celeste! Thank you. I know what you mean about the no-name bloggers.. feels odd while writing them a comment. You’re such a prolific blogger and a great “connector” too! Here’s to many years of fruitful blogging at Honk if you’re Vegan! 🙂
Thanks for your lovely comment Priya! Cheers right back at you girlfriend!! I hope you have a fabulous weekend girlfriend!! Celeste 🙂
Great post! Really interesting and useful tips. Thank you for sharing 🙂 and you’re so right chocolate is a sure fire way to get more hits.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting Jess! Haha – chocolate posts do it every time!! Celeste 🙂
Great tips, Celeste!
Oh thanks – I appreciate it! Celeste 🙂
I agree with all of these. Especially the one about the chocolate! My chocolate-coated peanut butter banana pops are my most popular post! http://coconutandberries.com/2013/07/23/chocolate-coated-peanut-butter-banana-pops/
Thanks for sharing 🙂
Hey Emma! Thanks so much for reading girlfriend!! And oh my – when I came across your chocolate coated peanut butter banana pops I knew I was in love!! They look so delicious (and easy). I still haven’t tried them, but I will soon! If you post more chocolate posts, be sure to let me know so I don’t miss them!! Celeste 🙂
I love what you shared here, and I agree with all of your tips at some level. I am not a great photographer and I cannot afford the bulk, weight and cost of a fine camera. I simply let Florence take the photos so that I have her to blame if they suck (which they don’t). I especially like keeping it short. I start to cringe when my word count gets over 500, and the only time I read a blog with over 1,000 words is if I know the writer. The only thing I might add to your list is to re-read before post and/or have someone edit it for you. Spelling, grammar and syntax do not have to be perfect, but it helps. Your friend and fellow writer, Mike. 🙂
Hey Mike! Since you say you agree with all of my tips at some level, I’m wondering if you’ve ever written a post about chocolate? I’m sure you’ve mentioned chocolate, but you probably haven’t written an entire post about chocolate. Oh maybe it doesn’t fit with your blog, but if you can find a way to do it I’d be excited to read it. Hmmmm….I think I’m hungry!
And you guys have no worries in the photo department. Not only does Florence take fabulous photos, but you always have such interesting, beautiful sites as your subject matter.
Editing! Yes, that’s an important tip. Thanks for reminding me of that one.
Have a beautiful weekend! Celeste 🙂
I have written about chocolate – the post about Cadbury World: http://wp.me/p2FYRz-mB
Thank you for asking. And you are right, the story generated lots of interested.
Just checked out your chocolate post – so fun!
So many great tips in here Celeste!(: Thanks so much!
-Alyssa
I’m so glad you appreciated these!! Thank you so much for reading and for all of your support – I so appreciate it! Celeste 🙂
Great tips! I try to keep my paragraphs short too, because I know big blocks of text can be off-putting to some people reading blogs, especially if they’re reading by phone. You’re right that commenting is so important in building relationships and a sense of community. I’m going to keep #16 in mind! I think I’ve only written about chocolate twice on my blog in the four years that I’ve had it! Along with “share your name,” I also think that sharing your photo is important. Without a picture, bloggers feel less like a real person. I like to know who is the person behind the text.
Thanks for reading Cadry! I’m glad you got something out of this post despite the fact that you probably know lots more about blogging than I do!! I really love your blog and would absolutely love to read about any tips you have about blogging. If you ever write such a post, please let me know so I don’t miss it! And as far as chocolate – it really works for me. Let me know if you write a chocolate post too. And your photograph tip is a good one too! Like you, I like to attach a face to what I’m reading! Celeste 🙂
Thanks so much Celeste for mentioning me! I’m really glad the make over worked out well in your blogging adventures!
I love the design you did Natasha! I still get people commenting on how cute it is! Celeste 🙂
Madam milla, you wrote good, but what about Downloads? Do you also give weightage to downloads in getting hits to bog? I have also downloads at my website:::
http://mushtaqtariq.wordpress.com
Thank you so much for reading and commenting – I appreciate it!! I didn’t write about Downloads because I don’t have any on my blog. I think it’s a GREAT idea, however. I know you have some wonderful Downloads on your blog. Maybe I should add a few Downloads to my blog. Awesome tip! Celeste 🙂
GREAT TIPS!!! #16 is my favourite 😉 Thanks for posting Celeste!
Oh thanks Myra!! 16 is my absolute favorite too!! Celeste 🙂
Thank you for sharing your tips with us Celeste! This is helpful!

Thanks for the tips. Your blog looks so professional. I am learning all the time. Please, how did you get your personal link box on to your avatar page? I see a lot of bloggers have this.
Thanks so much for reading and for your compliment Emy! And to answer your question, I asked my computer savvy hubby to do it for me (haha!). I’m sure he’d be happy to help you out too. I’ll ask him to get back to you about it when he gets off work. Celeste 🙂
Hi Emy. You can do it via gravatar.com. Just log in using you’re WordPress id and password. Click on your gravatar photo on the top right to access the pull-down menu. Click “Edit My Profile”. Click “My Links”. Type in the “Link URL…” (for example, “honkifyourevegan.com”) and the ‘Link Title…” (for example, “My Blog”) and click the “Add” button. That should do it. Good luck!!
Yea – I’m glad it worked for you Emy!

Sorry to still be stuck on this post, but what does ping back mean? Tried to find it on WP but no success. Thanks 🙂
Hey Emy! No worries about being stuck on this post – I’m flattered that you’re finding it helpful! Anyway, a ping back is when another blogger posts a link on her blog that takes readers to another blog. For example, Strawberry Lentils above posted a link on her blog that takes people to this post. Bloggers LOVE ping backs because it drives more traffic to their site. Celeste 🙂
Celeste. Thanks so much for your generosity of spirit by sharing your knowledge:).
You’re so welcome Emy – happy to help! Celeste 🙂
I agree with all your pointers. And yes! chocolate sure is a catcher 🙂 Will try to follow your advice in hope of generating more traffic to my space. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you have success with these tips! Let me know how they work for you! Celeste 🙂
