Muzita has been my favorite vegan-friendly restaurant in San Diego for a long time, but I’ve fallen in love with a new place. Last Sunday I ate lunch at Plumeria with my husband and sister, and as soon as I walked into this cozy, welcoming, pleasantly purple café I had a good feeling about it.
As I scanned the menu and saw that they had lots of items marked V (vegan) and GF (gluten-free) my good feeling grew. The other thing that I loved about their menu was the statement, Help save the environment, bring your own takeout containers and save $1 on all to go orders. How cool is that!
While we were studying the menu, our waitress came over to take our drink orders. I love Thai Iced Tea, but don’t order it because of the cream. Here, however; you can get it with cream, soymilk or coconut milk. I ordered one with coconut milk and my husband and sis did the same.
Our drinks came, and they were huge! And they didn’t sacrifice quantity for quality, they were delicious.
While taking our order, the waitress was friendly and helpful with suggestions. After some deliberation, my husband ordered the See-ew Noodles, my sis the Pumpkin Curry and I got the Rama.
Our meals came quickly, and I have to tell you that my Rama, which is sautéed veggies served on a bed of warm spinach topped with peanut sauce, was the best I’ve had. I also tasted my hubby’s See-ew and this too was amazing! I don’t handle spicy foods well so I didn’t sample my sister’s curry, but she said it was outstanding (and she’s been to Thailand!).
All of us agreed that the food here was a notch above any Thai food we’d ever had, and that’s before we had dessert. I was tempted by their Banana Caramel Cheese Cake Egg Roll and Chocolate Lava Cake, but they weren’t gluten-free. Instead, I ordered the Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango for all of us to share, which was wonderful!
If you go to San Diego, you’ve got to try this place. The only potential drawback is that it’s small and in a trendy area so I’m sure it’s packed Friday and Saturday nights.

Yes!! Me and my girlfriend go here all the time! The same people own The Asian Bistro in Hillcrest which is also amazing and very similar to the Plumeria menu. Vegan Thai food is my happy place…
Hey Rita! You’re so lucky to live close to Plumeria! I’d go there all the time if I lived in SD too (I live in Laguna Beach). I actually had a conversation with my husband on our drive home about moving back to San Diego. Of course, he thought I was crazy. Oh well, my sis and her partner live in SD, so I get out there often enough. Thanks so much for telling me about The Asian Bistro in Hillcrest – I’m excited to check that place out too. Hope you’re having a great week! Celeste 🙂
Wow 🙂
I agree. We have been there once and it was a pleasant setting, good service, and delicious meal. I wish the Vegan Planet Store was still nearby! Unfortunately, that closed recently.
Hey Mychael! I thought of you when I ate at Plumeria and wondered if you’d been there. I’ve never heard of the Vegan Planet Store, but it sounds cool. That’s too bad that they closed down. Sorry I haven’t been on Yelp much lately. I was bummed when I last went on and saw that they deleted most of my reviews. I’m guessing it’s because I had a link to my blog at the end of my posts which is probably not allowed. Anyway, I hope you have a great weekend! Celeste 🙂
I so need to move west. That first picture of pumpkin curry makes my mouth water. I guess I know what I’m having for lunch tomorrow — only I’ll sub the cushaw squash for the pumpkin and eggplant from my own neglected garden! Mmm…curry….
Like I told you Shannon, if you come out for a visit I’ll take you on a fab culinary tour. Celeste 🙂
You can use any squash you want, “Pumpkin” is a catch all word in Thai for squash.
Dad and I will have to go to this restaurant when we visit.
Hi Mom! Hopefully we’ll go to some restaurants as good at this on our upcoming trip. I always love trying new vegan restaurants. Celeste 🙂
That’s actually how I stumbled upon your blog…your Yelp review of LA Vegan Crepe. 🙂
Interesting! I guess the days of me getting awesome readers like you through Yelp are over. Oh well. Have a wonderful weekend cowgirl! Celeste 🙂
I will certainly try this restaurant the next time I am in San Diego. However, I need to learn the names of the dishes because we will probably make it to Thailand first. I love Thai food, so this may be a good experience for me. – Mike
You really are a globe trotter Mike! And with how much you love spicy food, I know you’ll love Thailand. My sister went to Thailand a few years ago and absolutely loved it. If you want any suggestions for your trip, I’m sure she’d be happy to help you out. Have a wonderful weekend! Celeste 🙂
Hi Celeste! That Thai tea looks pretty yummy right now. Next time I come to SoCal you will have to take me there.
You betcha chica! So when are you planning on coming to SoCal again Jeanne? You have to bring Bill with you the next time too. I know he would like where we live a lot better than Concord. Hope you’re having a fab weekend! Celeste 🙂
I crest my tenth year in my company so I will get a third week sometime next year for vacation. Sometime in early 2015.
That’s so awesome that you plan to come out for another visit! We’ll see different sites the next time – that will be so much fun! Paul really, really wants to know if Bill’s planning on coming the next time. Celeste:)
Oh yum! All of the food looks amazing. I adore vegan Thai food.
How far is Laguna Beach from SD?
Hey Ally! Depending on where you’re going in San Diego, it’s about an hour and fifteen minute drive. Unfortunately, too far for my husband and me to go to Plumeria on a regular basis. Do you have any good vegan Thai restaurants near where you live? I don’t think of Australia as being especially vegan friendly, but I’ve never been, so I don’t really know. Celeste 🙂
