I was in high school in the 80’s and all I cared about was big hair, Flashdance inspired off-the-shoulder sweat shirts, keeping my weight down enough so I could squeeze into my size 13 Guess jeans and going to the mall with my friends. I wasn’t a bad kid, but I didn’t have direction for my life at that age. I wasn’t even thinking about the future.
Not so for high school student Nicole Chamberlin who writes the blog Health Advocation http://healthadvocation.wordpress.com/about/. I liked this fitness, health and nutrition blog when I came across it, but I was blown away when I found out it was written by a teenager. Wondering what inspired Nicole to spend time writing a blog instead of doing the slacker stuff that I did at her age, I read about her AHA! moment.
Nicole apparently had a sleepless night where she ruminated about her future and decided that, despite her parent’s urging; she didn’t want to work at a job she hated just for the money. This was her early wake up call, her coming of age discovery, her AHA! No, she would follow her passion. She would become a health coach and do what she loved.
She may not be getting paid for it yet, but in my mind Nicole already is a health, and perhaps life, coach. Her blog certainly gave me some life coaching anyway. She’s reminded me not to settle in my career or in my life, to follow my passion and to do what I love. Yes, we need money to live, but this too follows passion.
This post is for you Nicole – you go girl! And hey, if “you go girl” is out of fashion, you have to remember that I was a teenager when wearing pink leg warmers was cool.
