I’ve only succeeded with fasting once in my life. I was in my late 20’s on a cross country trip with my much younger, free-wheeling sister. The plan was to leisurely drive up the California coast and then head east toward Iowa where I’d finalize my divorce. On the first day, my sister told me that she wanted to fast for the next three days. Wanting to lose weight and show my soon-to-be ex-husband the hot chick he was giving up, I decided to do it with her.
Although I’d never succeeded with fasting in the past, with my sister, it was easy. We had so much fun swimming in the ocean, hiking and walking around funky beach towns that I wasn’t bothered by our lack of nourishment. As I’d hoped, the fast made me look great. I lost weight and my problem skin became so clear and smooth that my completion looked pretty without makeup. It didn’t, however; make my then husband change his mind about divorcing me (and thank God! He freed me to find my soul mate, Paul).
Some years ago, in an attempt to clear my skin, I tried to fast again and failed. I didn’t have the willpower not to eat. I haven’t attempted to fast since then, but ever since going plant-based I’ve considered doing a smoothie cleanse, which is kind of a fast. It involves eating nothing but smoothies made from fruits, vegetables and water for a period of time. I want to do a cleanse because I’ve read how beneficial they are, but every time I consider it I chicken out.
I started thinking about doing a cleanse today, however; and I think I’m really going to do it this time. If I go shopping for the fruits and veggies tonight, I can start tomorrow. Oh, who am I kidding? I failed at my attempt to resist cookies yesterday, so what makes me think I can resist eating for an entire week? Maybe I can do it for just one day and see how that goes. If it goes well, I can do a second day. That doesn’t sound so bad. Okay, it’s settled – I’m doing this!
My smoothie cleanse commitment
Tomorrow, Friday February 15, 2013, I will not have any solid food. The only things I will put into my mouth are green smoothies, water and hot tea.
I appreciate anyone who takes the time to say hello! I love receiving your comments and questions, so please contact me. Email: celestedimilla(at)yahoo(dot)com (pardon this funky spelling…it helps prevent spam).
